GASWAL

Exposition space & restaurant – Studio Jet Tillmann – 2022

We worked on the design of a pavilion in the heart of Park of Dutch Dreams in Doetinchem. The park is designed by Piet Oudolf, Nico Wissing and other landscape designers. The Gaswal pavilion will host a permanent exhibition of Piet Oudolf’s work, and will also include a restaurant with a large terrace overlooking the river Oude IJssel.

The building consists of two volumes with a contrasting appearance and different functions. The lower restaurant volume is visually pushed out from the exhibition space. The slightly tapered shape of the building fits well with the narrowing layout of the park. The two volumes are connected by a transparent passage framed in anthracite colored steel. This passage serves as the main entrance, from where visitors can access either the restaurant or the exhibition area.

Thanks to the existing canopy of trees and the roof overhang of the restaurant, there is a subtle transition from inside to outside, allowing the terrace to be used for as long as possible throughout the seasons.

The restaurant is built with wooden ceilings, the terrace with steel columns in a warm color. The warm tones give the space a welcoming atmosphere that fits the function of the restaurant. The exhibition volume is made with biobased façade panels. The white interior is neutral and calm. This suits the minimalist character of the exhibition space.
