EXPO

Exposition building with a restaurant – Studio Jet Tillmann – 2020 unbuilt

Location
The location has a beautiful view on a river and a unique park with flowers, plants and adult trees. The city center is located directly next to the location, so a connection between city and park is essential. As part of a bigger masterplan the intention is to design a pavilion in the middle of the park. Visitors of the park can go to the pavilion for information about the park, to eat and drink something in the restaurant or to buy a book in the exposition space.

Concept
By dividing the volume into smaller parts, the building optically has a smaller scale and the cascading blocks fits the shape of the park. To make a connection between city and park a diagonal corridor with a glass roof intersects the building blocks. The exposition space is located at the city side, the restaurant at the water side.

The high entrance door and walls of the diagonal corridor make the visitors curious about what is inside the building, behind this big door. When the visitor enters the building they see a diagonal path with glass roof in front of them. On the sides they can enter the exposition blocks, but always can go back to the diagonal path with natural light entrance from above. At the end of this path they see a big glass door that shows the park. With all the interesting knowledge about plants and landscape designers that they gained at the exposition, they can walk through the park and enjoy the experience.

Materiality
The facade will be clad with leftover bricks from brick factories in the neighborhood. By using different types of bricks, the different blocks will be accentuated. Hollow bricks will attract insects, to establish nests, which is good for the biodiversity. The construction will be made of wood with wood fiber insulation. CO2 emmisions will be kept low by using local materials.
