Urban design competition, apartment complex in Estavayer-Le-Lac, 2014

Together with a Spanish architect I worked on the urban development of an apartment complex in the Swiss city Estavayer-le-Lac. The main goal was to connect the train station with the old city center. We realized this by creating a path through the complex , surrounded by islands. These 5 islands exist of a plinth with apartments on top. The path through the island is very public, the park space on top of the islands is for more private use.

The location has a height difference of 8 meters, what will be compensated by different heights of the islands. The west side of the plinth is hereby low and because of the slope the east side of the plinth will be one story high, which gives the possibility to situate shops in these parts of the plinth. Hereby the path from the train station towards the old city center becomes more attractive for the pedestrians and guides the people towards the old center.

On top of the different islands you can find apartments. The islands have a green roof and become park landscapes and give the possibility for children to play. From the higher north to the lower south the amount of levels for the apartment buildings decreases, hereby it follows the natural slope of the area.

I joined this competition in April, which we won in Juli 2014.
